They are pointing, you're right. Have a look at the substack entries 12 and 13 where I go into it/them (and the Staring Birds) in more detail. In my interpretation, they are pointing to a mystery that in its turn points to the central mystery.

ANOTHER DIMENSION IS OPENED UP ON BOSCH’S WORKS

Not only are all works visible in super high resolution, but many can be seen in Infra-Reds, and some in X-Ray vision.

Sometimes this reveals completely different setups, generally called the underpaintings.

It shows how the painter(s) worked, and in a few times sheds a light on the symbolism.

Without doing research on it now, staring people may be family of pointing people.

Bosch goes at length to aid the viewer what is worth looking at.

“Ghosts” and “confetti” are underlayers coming through.

Paints deteriorate in time, esp. when they contain white.

The examples mentioned are figures and trees from the underpainting.

See my X/tweets and insta’s on underpainting, IR, Infra-Red, X-Ray with many examples.

Could well be right. Underpainting coming through sounds very likely. Although there’s still a bit of a mystery in the other ‘ghosts’. There’s a couple apparently swimming in the meadow on the right of the panel above the waterline. It’s as though the grass is water. And below the upside down bear (regarding which you retweeted the interesting idea that it might be a parody of a ‘relict litter’) there is a couple sitting, very sketchily. I wonder if it is underpainting or something more intentional.

(Also, outside the entrance to the left hand blue ‘cloud fort’ there are two barely discernible figures under the light hole - rather less intentional, perhaps.)

*You’re right, the couple ‘swimming’ in the meadow were also an original design. Later the meadow was painted over them.

*Under the bear were four figures in the design, very clearly visible on the IR image. See my posts on X and Insta of today.

*The figure rests before the blue cloud fort is a bit different story, it seems the paints has fallen off or has been accidentally abrased, worn off.
